Conserving art objects in the public view is an idea whose time has come. Fragile wall paintings from Mexico are being treated in two prominent galleries in the de Young Museum in San Francisco behind a large Plexiglas window. Tapestry conservation exhibits were held by the de Young and by the Minneapolis Institute of Art. The Cincinnati Art Museum allowed visitors to watch the treatment of a large Benjamin West painting. Conservation exhibitions have inspired volunteer assistance, educated the public, and generated funding sources. Conservation exhibits require careful planning; pressures can undermine treatment effectiveness. Viewer visitation is highest on weekends when conservators are normally not present. Dealing with interruptive inquiries and isolation from co-workers may be difficult. -- AATA
