These general recommendations are addressed to the collector or the curator who has only a few musical instruments in his care. They present the materials used in the making of western instruments, the causes of instrument deterioration, a general discussion of restoration (with specific information for several types of instruments -- lute, harp, stringed keyboard, wind, organ), and the materials used in conservation.
