Abstract
In order to study the provenance of bronzes and their mineral sources, indicator elements of ancient copper ore and their smelted metallic products must first be known. With higher contents of Se, Te, Ni (mostly, Co/Ni less than 1), Au, Ag and lower contents Sb, Bi, Mo as indicator elements of ancient copper ingots of Tongling site, copper mineral sources of some unearthed bronzes in Southern Anhui along Changjiang river have been determined. Some bronzes used Tongling's copper material, and some (such as samples Tc2007, Tc2005, and Fc12) from other sites. Large vessels, as Ding and Li, were probably cast in some other place, and then introduced to this place. The work has shown that it is feasible to probe into the copper material sources of bronze-making metals by using trace elements.
