Abstract
The causes of deterioration of the Temple are attributed to physical, chemical, and biological factors. The major cause of deterioration is frost and freezing. A petrographic examination illustrates the potential for mechanical damage and loss due to freezing of water in the capillaries and pores of the stone. Three types of analysis are suggested to identify the clays (aluminosilicates) in the stone. Means for multiple simultaneous recording of temperature have been found and a frost simulation apparatus is described and illustrated. The construction of a shelter could protect the temple from frost and erosion. Three proposals for treatment of the stone are offered. -- AATA
