Of the Thracian tumuli that have been excavated, only two have contained decorative wall paintings (Kazanluk and Maglish, Bulgaria). The two construction designs of tumuli with burial chamber are discussed. The painting techniques used in the Kazanluk tomb, dating from the third century BC are described. Similar painting techniques were used in painting the interior of the Maglish tomb, but the color scheme is different. Steps taken to protect the tombs when they were opened are described. The wall paintings of the Maglish tomb were all detached, and the fragments mixed with dirt and brick on the floor. Acoordinate system of recording these fallen pieces was devised for ease of reassembling. The procedures followed for cleaning, consolidation, and reassembly are outlined.
