This icon, measuring 87 by 65 cm., is dated to the second half of the fifteenth century and, although unsigned, is ascribed to the hagiographer Andreas Ritzos. All research methods and facilities available in the restoration laboratory of the Benaki Museum, Athens, Greece, have been employed for the diagnosis, location of damages and study of the painting technique. X-ray analysis of the pigments was carried out at the Democritus Nuclear Research Center. The pigments identified were Celadonide terra verde, red cinnabar, and lead white. The existence of overpaintings executed at various times and the extensive damage to the wood due to wood-eating insects were the two major problems of the icon. Therefore, special effort was made during restoration to remove all overpaintings so that the painting could appear in its original form. The missing parts of the deteriorated wood were substituted with balsa wood, while the entire wooden painting support was saturated with a synthetic resin. Inpainting was performed in those areas where both ground and pictorial layers were damaged. The conservation materials used were Lindane, Paraloid B72, Lascaux adhesive wax 443-95, Lascaux acrylic emulsion 498-20x (Plextol), Lascaux Hydroground 750, Ketone N resin, Lascaux acrylic resin 550-40TB gloss, and Lascaux acrylic resin 550-35 matte. -- AATA
