Abstract
The author discusses the methods used in pattern making and the application of color to fabric before the discovery of synthetic dyes in 1856. Six cotton fabrics, printed between 17851845, are used to illustrate hand-painting, block printing, resisting and roller printing, and combinations of these techniques. A discussion of available dyes, mordants and special tools for the various processes is also given. -- AATA
