Abstract
This paper deals with five examples of damage to the stone of sculptures and monuments which the author has come across in the course of his conservation work. These range from staining of the stone surface to salt action on granite. This salt action was noticed on the pillars of a temple about 25 miles (40 kilometers) from the coast near Madras. As a result, the granite has become fragile and brittle. The preservation carried out in some cases or the preservatory measures suggested in others are also described. -- AATA
