Samples from most of the known ancient flint mines and quarries in Britain were analyzed, together with over 400 axes. The results confirm that the axes were made from non-local flint, but suggest that it may not be possible to assign individual axes to particular sources. Overall trends indicate the flint axe production was concentrated in South Downs mines, other large sites elsewhere producing very few axes. East Anglia had a high percentage of unprov enanced axes suggesting that there may be as yet undiscovered flint mines in that region.
