Prehistoric pottery from the Orkneys commonly contains a temper of crushed dyke-rock. Other features observed in thin-section indicate that this reflects deliberate selection of a preferred raw material by potters working over a wide area; rather than a trade or exchange network. Such distinctive technological features may be a stronger reflection of tradition and culture than are typological characteristics. See also 20-1992. -- AATA
