Abstract
In a cold environment, various damages upon historic stone remains are caused by their disintegration, due to freezing. The authors conducted the freezing experiments using a frost susceptible rock to examine the effectiveness of synthetic resins for the preservation. Rock specimens of a tertiary tuff from Tochigi prefecture were treated by the impregnation withthree kinds of synthetic resins (i.e., silicone, epoxy, and acrylic resins), and then were subjected to a freeze-thaw test in a cold room. The porosities and ultrasonic velocities of specimens were measured at every five cycles of freeze-thaw. Through the experimental run, neither breaking nor changes of physical properties were observed on the specimens treated by silicone resins, while the other two resins showed no preventive effect on frost shattering. The author also discussed the mechanism of the protective effect of silicone resin.
