Methylcellulose is being used as a lubricant (in place of water) or binder in the making of pottery. Lubricating with methylcellulose allows the potter to throw higher with less resultant slumping and more green strength. Because of its capacity to retain water, methylcellulose helps reduce absorption and cracking during glazing. Adding it to Albany slip glaze resulted in a tough surface that resisted handling.
