Abstract
Fragments of an Eastern Chou bronze <i>ding</i> from a tomb at Liulige, Huixian, Henan Province (ca. 500 BC) have been examined. The fragments were reconstructed to the original shape of the vessel according to the <i>li ding</i> system. Indications of the method of manufacture such as mold joins were noted. Sections were made of a leg, handle, and grip on the cover in order to investigate the nature of the construction and the method of joining. It has been verified that the vessel was cast in a piece-mold assembly and the appurtenances affixed by the interlock method; the repeated decor was effected by impressed blocks from master patterns. Lead content of the bronze was much higher than in bronzes of the Shang and Western Chou periods, and the corrosion structure also showed differences. In addition, it was evident that typical mass production methods used in that period were represented in the manufacture of this <i>ding</i> cauldron.
