A fragment from a Chinese late Chou Dynasty vase has been examined to determine the method by which copper figures were inlaid in the thin-walled bronze vessel. The investigation revealed that the inlay was cast directly to the thin section required. Spacers or chaplets were 'soldered' to the back of the inlay to permit location within the mold-core assembly, and the vessel was cast with a high tin, high lead bronze, mechanically locking the inlay to the bronze wall. Repairs were effected on the bronze vessel after casting. -- AATA
