Abstract
The authors present a detailed comparison of the instrumental techniques of ICP-MS and Atomic Absorption Analysis for use with archaeological native silver artifacts. The choices of analysis conditions, sample preparation, and isotopes for quantization are described. Seventy-three samples of North American Indian native silver were analyzed and subjected to 'single linkage cluster analysis' with the result that eight clusters emerged. These are briefly related to proposed geographic sources. The implications of being able to define the sources of the silver for various Indian cultures and their trading routes should prove a major archaeological advance. -- AATA
