In a lecture to the Textile Conservation Group, Mr. Himmelstein described the treatment of four textiles using adhesive methods. The adhesive used was a mixture of the poly(vinyl acetate) resins AYAA and AYAC with an activation point of 135°F; all applications were set by hand with a tacking iron, although in some cases a vacuum hot table could be used. A Civil War flag was adhered to nylon net and then stitched to a fabric-covered strainer. A Matisse print on silk was adhered to a support fabric using PVA-coated nylon net as a mounting tissue. A Civil War banner with paintings on both sides was not treated, but a support of PVA-coated neutral color polyester net was proposed. Another painted banner formed of two pieces of silk was treated initially as a painting, and the flaking paint was consolidated with a PVA resin in alcohol. Each piece of silk was then adhered to a piece of ragboard using PVA-coated nylon net as a mounting tissue. A discussion of the use of PVA resins for the mounting of textiles is also given. -- AATA
