In this manual, conservators tell housekeepers how to provide daily care for the fabric and furnishings in the National Trust houses of England and Wales. (Abstractor's note: Much of the advice, which is clear, conservative and often emphatic, has relevance to other furnished historic structure museums.) A chapter on the environment discusses control of light and atmospheric conditions. Subsequent chapters treat in turn the requirements of books and documents, ceramics, clocks and watches, floors, furniture, glass, metalwork, musical instruments, photographs, pictures, sculpture and plasterwork, taxidermy, textiles, wallpaper and leather hangings, walls along with windows and ceilings, and miscellaneous furnishings. Pointing out the nature of materials and hazards, the authors recommend methods of inspection, the minimal necessary cleaning, and safe handling procedures. Five appendices give more details on practical light control measures, instruments for measuring environmental conditions, housekeeping equipment and supplies, and the names and addresses of English suppliers.
