Abstract
Pigment samples were collected from three pictograph sites in the western Great Basin of eastern California and from the Coso Hot Springs mineral deposits. These samples were chemically analyzed by x-ray fluorescence, and the micromorphology studied with a scanning electron microscope. The purpose of the study was to determine how much variation exists among the different pigments, and to see how closely the Coso Hot Springs minerals match the pigments used in the site closest to the springs. This study is also intended to be a beginning in the establishment of a data base of California pictograph pigments and their sources.
