The treatment of an early 19th century mourning picture, painted in gouache and embroidered on silk is described. The silk ground fabric was brittle with splits and losses, tide lines from previous aqueous treatment, and abraded, and the gouache had suffered extensive cleavage. Ethyl cellulose in a solvent mixture was sprayed on the surface and the reverse of the gouache to consolidate it. After unsuccessful treatment on a cold suction table, the picture was float-washed for twenty minutes, dried and pressed. The piece was finally adhered using a tacking iron to nylon net which had been sprayed with a poly(vinyl acetate) resin mixture, and mounted on a fabric-covered strainer. -- AATA
