The analysis of materials provides not only precise data about the composition of historical objects, but also information for identification of the place and date of manufacture. From the composition, the social or economic milieu at the time of manufacture can be deduced. Problems of authenticity can be solved by analysis of the material. Finally, the analysis of the materials of works of art is important in the choice of restoration and preservation treatments.
