Abstract
The importance of analysis of paint samples during forensic examination is presented. Physical examination includes visual and microscopic examination and solubility tests. Chemical analysis helps to identify binders, pigments, and trace elements. Techniques include: infrared spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, pyrolysis gas chromatography, energy dispersive spectroscopy (x-ray analysis) and neutron activation analysis. The importance of close collaboration between the forensic analyst and the coatings industry chemist is stressed. -- AATA
