Abstract
The advantages of measuring <sup>14</sup>C levels in archaeological and environmental samples by mass spectrometry are discussed. Its limitations in respect to the number of samples that can be dated during any five-year period suggest that an appropriate and efficient use of this method needs to be thoroughly considered in advance.
