Abstract
Chemical pretreatment procedures for the decontamination, extraction, and isolation of organic materials for <sup>14</sup>C dating of very small samples using the Oxford accelerator system are described. This study concentrates on the isolation and purification by ion exchange chromatography of amino acids from bone collagen, a procedure which is also applicable to tooth, antler, and ivory collagen; of lipids from lake sediments, which should give a relatively precise date for deposition of the sediments since the lipids can often be related to specific plant sources; and of cellulose and glucose from wood and from cellulose-based textiles and papers. Also described are the Oxford techniques for preparing 1-5 milligram samples of graphite on tantalum wire supports for use in the accelerator ion source.
