Based upon a review of the literature, a technical and historical description of the limp vellum binding and its appropriateness as a conservation binding is presented. This binding not only provides greater protection against water damage, but also serves as sounder protection to the book-block under normal conditions than some other historical bindings, which have actually proven themselves to be harmful. This technique can still benefit from improvements in harmony with its basic structure and intent, for example in improvements on the end paper technique, and can be adapted for use with other materials, such as in the limp paper binding. The technique is to be highly recommended in the restoration of smaller historical volumes. -- AATA
