A leather jerkin, made from tanned goatskin and dated to around 1530, was found in a canal in amsterdam. A drawing of the jerkin was made and a paper pattern constructed. A reconstruction of it was made in new leather before restoration of the original garment. Before reconstruction the old leather was treated to remove iron salts and carbonates, using a commercial compound oakite, which could be replaced by 3% orthophosphoric acid, oxalic or ascorbic acid plus surfactant. Soaking was followed by washing. The dried leather was treated with castor oil. Bound, free fat contents, iron/copper concentrations were determined. New calf was used for infilling (previously dyed and treated with imidazol), and mowilith pva dispersion as adhesive. Finally the pieces were sewn together. Photographs.
