Research methods must be employed that ensure that both archaeological and historical data be synthesized in a constructive manner. The study of the inside bore of pipestem fragments from Flowerdew Hundred, a Virginia plantation (1619-1720), illustrates such an approach. When combined with probate data and other primary historical sources, it suggests changes in the social and residential status of blacks during the century. -- AATA
