Methods for studying fired clay vessels used worldwide from prehistoric times to the present are examined in detail. Historical origins of pottery making in the Old World and the New World are discussed. Raw materials of pottery are covered. Manufacture, trade, decoration and use of pottery among traditional potters today are summarized.
