Abstract
A brief historical survey of Eskimo kayaks is given. A model kayak from the British Museum (London) is described, together with details of its documentation. Its condition, and the structure of the sealskin and gut used in its construction are described. Details of Eskimo preparation of skins and gut are given. Experiments on the treatment of gut and suitable repair materials are discussed. The methods and materials used in the final treatment are described. List of suppliers of material.
