Seven hundred fifty prehistoric potsherds from sites on 50 islands in 15 major island groups of the southern and western Pacific have been examined in thin-section with a view to identifying transported wares. Moded frequency counts of different categories of sand grains present in the pottery allow the tempering materials to be related to geological environment. Movement of pottery over distances of up to 5,000 kilometers has been established. -- AATA
