Sixty specimens of Egyptian glass dating from the New Kingdom (14th century B.C.) to the early lslamic period (12th century A.D.) were analyzed for major and trace constituents by emission spectroscopy and neutron activation. The analytical methods are described in detail in an appendix. Egyptian glass throughout this period is basically a soda-lime glass, but can be divided into 3 types on the basis of its magnesium and potassium. The use of antimony as an opacifier, and the contribution of trace elements to give color are discussed. Sand core vessels were made early; glass blowing was introduced by the Romans. -- AATA
