The decoration on several ancient pots may be the result of post-firing painting. The following cases are discussed: 1. Crusted ware, late Neolithic period from Thessalia, bearing a red paste containing red pigment (alpha Fe₂O₃) dolomite or serpentine and montmorillonite. 2. Polychrome pottery from El Tarif, Egypt, 11th Dynasty. 3. Polychrome pottery from Thebe and El Amarna, Egypt, 18th Dynasty. The paint layer contained gypsum. 4. Yellow painted pottery from Northern Karnak, Egypt, 19th Dynasty. The paint layer also contained gypsum. 5. Polychrome attic pottery. 5th century B.C. The paint layer contained beta-cupric hydroxychloride. -- AATA
