Eight clays from Upper and Lower Egypt showed some significant differences in physical properties; these differences can be useful in sorting and studying ancient pottery from well-excavated sites. Studies of linear drying and firing shrinkage were made. Thermally induced changes in hardness and color were observed. Differences between surface and body composition were noted by examination with the scanning electron microscope. -- AATA
