Preliminary reconnaissance has identified two 3rd-4th millennium BCE milling stone quarry sites in the Makhtesh Ramon. Petrographic analyses of samples taken from these sites, and from the secondary workshop at the Camel Site in Mitzpe Ramon, indicate the exploitation of several different types of Jurassic sandstones from several sources for the manufacture of milling stones. The combination of mining at the quarry sites, secondary reduction at the Camel Site, and consumption at, for example, Arad, reflects a pastoral production and exchange system between the Central and Northern Negev.
