Reverse glass painting originated in Europe and became very popular in the U.S. in the 19th century. It was not unusual for a competent artist to produce over 6,000 works a year. Stencils and transfers were sometimes used to simplify and speed up the process. The best reverse paintings were done free hand. Reverse glass work represents an important and neglected state in the development of American decorative arts.
