Abstract
A report on the technical examination of 5 paintings by Raphael in the National Gallery of Art, Washington, using x-radiography, ultraviolet examination, optical microscopy, energy-dispersive x-ray fluorescence analysis, and infrared reflectography. Comparison of the radiographs of the paintings made between 1506 and 1510 indicates certain similarities of technique, especially an undermodelling using a pigment mixture with heavy use of white lead. Underdrawing was used as an intermediate step between the pouncing of a cartoon onto the panel and the application of the underpaint. Photographs, references.
