This article is an excerpt from Pan Jixing's major work which treats the different types of paper found in ancient China. It is based on studies and tests conducted over a period of 15 years. Pan Jixing describes watermarked paper from the Northern Sung dynasty (oldest example 1081 AD), coated paper from the Liang dynasty (oldest example 348 AD), wax coated Paper from the Sui and Tang dynasties, wall paper (earliest examples ca 1700 AD), sized paper (oldest example 384 AD), dyed paper (oldest example 406 AD), anti-moth paper from the Han dynasties (206 BC-221 AD), waterproof paper from the Tang dynasty (618-907 AD), moss paper, and paper decorated with gold dust from the Ming dynasty (1368-1644 AD). -- AATA
