In July 1983, at the Public Archives, Ottawa, a copy of the Canadian Constitutional Proclamation was vandalized with red paint. Attempts to remove it while still wet, both on site and on the cold suction table with organic solvents, were only partly effective. Tests found no solvents could completely dissolve and remove the dried paint. Treatment possibilities now under study are outlined: chemical destruction of pigments in the paint; irradiation of the stained area (photo-chemical bleaching); and the use of laser technology to volatilize selectively the different components of the offending paint.
