In order to introduce the potential utility of petrography for studying ancient ceramics, several topics are presented in this article. Several examples in the first section demonstrate its potential applications. The practical reasons for studying ceramics by petrography are enumerated in the second section, followed by a case example using petrographic methods to study a specific archaeological problem.
