This paper reviews various field-tested methods for cleaning machinery and treating surface rust as preparation for display. The treatments combine the use of traditional conservation methods with commercial and industrial materials and techniques. These can be adapted and applied successfully on a small scale to meet the requirements of conservation-restoration projects. Cleaning techniques such as pressure washing, grease and oil removal, emulsion cleaning and immersion cleaning are discussed. The author also presents information on rust removal including rust converters, mechanical removal, grinding, abrasive blasting and chemical removal when the removal of rust is necessary prior to applying a surface coating.
