Conservation architects and planners are providing a comprehensive database and technical advice to help the local community and government authorities conserve a unique example of Australian Garden Suburb development, Haberfield, in Sydney. They have used the philosophy and methodology of the Australian ICOMOS Charter for the Conservation of Places of Cultural Significance (the Burra Charter, 1981), Australia's national adaptation of the Venice Charter (1966) and the Moscow Resolutions (1978). The fate of other garden suburbs in Sydney and Adelaide is discussed as well. Of the many garden suburbs and model towns planned, only a few were to be realized but the philosophy which shaped their conception markedly influenced the future urban pattern of Australian suburbs and towns.
