Pedochronology has only recently been applied as an archaeometric tool in Australia, due partly to the antiquity and complexity of many Australian soils, but mostly as a result of a dearth of suitable pedochronologic information. Selected results from an east Australian soil chronosequence study are presented, which include specific field observable characteristics such as soil horizon thickness and dominant horizon colors, as well as laboratory determination of pH, organic matter content, and the accumulation or depletion of certain cations in soil horizons.
