At the beginning of the 1970's comprehensive and systematic research on prehistoric Scandinavian music was started under the term archaeomusicology. Hitherto this research has been concentrated on the search for concrete evidence of music and sound in prehistoric Scandinavia. The present article briefly introduces methods, problems and analytical aids connected with the gathering, evaluation and interpretation of the source material for Nordic archaeomusicol ogy. Furthermore, the article contains a collation and discussion of the types of prehistorical musical instruments or sound-producing devices found in Scandinavia. See 18-1076. -- AATA
