There is a description of the destruction and restoration along the 360-mile Appia Antica (312 B.C.). Described is the restoration, from many shards, of the large marble of Odysseus attacking the Cyclops Polyphemus; this treasure is now in a museum in Sperionga. Other parts of the sculpture had been broken up to be used for drainage for grapes. Three Rhodian sculptors who did the Laocoon are believed to have worked here. Also mentioned are the Tomb of Cicero, a Roman copy of Aphrodite, the ruins of Minturnae, wooden bridges, original stones, a restored theater, mosaics, and other ruins. -- AATA
