Abstract
D/L ratios of amino acids were determined for wood, bone, and mollusks from Quaternary sedimentary units from sections located in northern Yukon that have had a long history of permafrost conditions to evaluate the usefulness of D/L ratios in correlating relative age-dating equivalence units between sections, and to determine the magnitude of racemization to be expected from specimens of various ages under these conditions. D/L ratios of total amino acids were determined by gas chromatography. Aspartic acid was the most useful. D/L ratios of aspartic acid from wood of various species showed wood to be a possible stratigraphic tool. Freshwater mollusk D/L ratios also appeared to offer stratigraphic utility whereas bone analyses did not support the geological interpretation of the age and sequence of deposits. -- AATA
