Abstract
Summarizes the results of AAS and X-ray fluorescence (XRF) analysis of several hundred Egyptian non-ferrous metal artifacts from the late pre-dynastic period to the late period. The majority of artifacts are tools and weapons including models. Results show that pure copper or copper alloyed with arsenic was used up to the Middle Kingdom when tin bronze was introduced in quantity. From then on tin bronze was used more frequently until by the New Kingdom it was the dominant alloy although some unalloyed copper and arsenical copper still persisted. A high degree of control was exerted over the alloy composition for certain artifact types. Function dictated alloy. Models were generally made of the same alloy as their full-size counterparts.
