Abstract
Studies of the thermo-remanent magnetization of the ash and pumice mixture which buried Herculaneum indicate that the temperature of the deposit was unlikely to have exceeded 400°C. This suggests that the deposits at the site were largely of the hot pyroclastic flow type. -- AATA
