The Fitch laboratory of the British School of Archaeology in Athens collaborates with Greek and foreign archaeologists on various archaeological topics within two main categories, 1) the provenance of artifacts and 2) the subject of ancient technology, to which scientific and analytical techniques are applied. Major projects undertaken so far within the first category are the analysis by optical emission spectroscopy of Aegean wares and studies of the Mycenaean pottery trade with Cyprus. Major projects of the second category are the identification of raw materials for the preparation of bronzes in the Late Bronze Age and the post Mycenaean era using an x-ray fluorescence spectrometer; and the analysis of the pigments, plasters and painting techniques of Knossian frescoes throughout the Minoan period. -- AATA
