The article summarises the first results of an ongoing research project on the development of standardised packing solutions for museum and collection storage areas lacking air conditioning. The project is performed by the Kunsthistorisches Museum Vienna (KHM), the Essl Museum, the Wien Museum (Modesammlung Hetzendorf) and the Conservation Department of the University of Applied Arts in cooperation with the Österreichisches Forschungsinstitut für Chemie & Technik (ofi). It is funded by the Österreichische Forschungsförderungsgesellschaft mbH (FFG) and covers practical tests on packing a broad variety of objects – from small metal jewellery up to whole carriages as well as vast numbers of similar objects – in different plastic foils (PE [polyethylene], SiOx [silicon oxide] coated, EVOH [ethyl vinyl alcohol]) for various reasons. In addition, fundamental studies on the behaviour of packed synthetic materials (e.g. rubber) and tests on the permeability of different air pollutants through the various types of foils will be presented.
