The face-mounting of photographs with PMMA, poly (methyl methacrylate), sheets has become popular among contemporary photographers for mounting their work. Face-mounting provides a saturation of colour and a sensation of depth, similar to varnish on a painting. Although some have claimed that facemounting is a protective measure, recent observations indicate that damage and ageing will be future problems. Furthermore, because the PMMA is part of the object, and not a sheet placed in front of the photograph, cleaning is also a major issue. An international network is carrying out research to develop guidelines for the conservation and restoration of face-mounted photographs. The initial results of this project are discussed in this communication.
