The Library of Congress “Afghan War” album, containing 97 albumen prints from the Second Anglo-Afghan War, was severely deteriorated and could not be accessed by patrons. Before discussing treatment strategy, the conservators explored the context in which the images were produced, details of the album’s assembly, and the relationship of the album to other albums that document the same events. Panoramic photographs showed damage related to their placement within the album, and so the authors provided a rationale and context for their removal and rehousing alongside the original album, once treated. Digital facsimiles were created to replace the panoramas in the album in order to retain the experience of viewing the progression of images as chosen by the original compiler.
